Course Objectives
- • To enable the students to learn about different structures of woven fabric and design the structure for different applications.
Full Unit-wise Syllabus
Unit I – Elementary Weaves
Introduction – methods of representing weave on point paper, construction of design, draft, and lifting plan, types of draft, heald calculation, order of denting; elementary weaves – plain, twill, satin, sateen and their derivatives – loom requirements.
Activities: Collect fabric samples with different weave structure & generic names, 3D visualization, Computer aided textile designing
Unit II – Special Weaves I
Ordinary and brighten honey comb; huck-a-back and its modifications; mock Leno; crepe weaves; colour and weave effects; Bedford cords - plain and twill faced, wadded; welts and piques, wadded piques, draft and peg plan for these weaves; loom requirements.
Activities: Collect fabric samples with different weave structure & generic names, 3D visualization, Computer aided textile designing
Unit III – Special Weaves II
Backed fabrics warp and weft, reversible and non-reversible fabrics; extra warp and extra weft figuring - single and double colour – loom requirements.

Unit IV – Pile Fabrics and Velveteen
Pile fabrics; warp pile - wire pile, terry pile, loose backed; weft pile – plain back and twill back velveteen, lashed pile, corduroy, and weft plush – loom requirements.

Unit V – Special Fabrics
Double cloth, types of stitches; Damasks; Gauze and Leno principles – loom requirements; trade name of popular structures.

Course Outcomes (COs)
- CO1: Understand the fundamental concepts of woven fabric structure including yarn systems, weave types, and fabric construction parameters.
- CO2: Apply knowledge of weave structures and fabric construction parameters to determine their influence on fabric properties and (2) end use requirements.
- CO3: Analyze woven fabric designs and structures with respect to strength, durability, appearance, and performance (2) characteristics.
- CO4: Evaluate woven fabric structures and select appropriate weave patterns, yarns, and construction parameters for specific apparel (2) and textile applications. Basic Sewing Machinery Practice Laboratory.
