Course Objectives
- To enable the students to learn the fundamentals and types of knitting and nonwoven.
Full Unit-wise Syllabus
Unit I – Fundamentals of Knitting
Comparison of fabric properties-woven, knitted and bonded fabrics; classification of knitting processes – weft knit & warp knit; yarn quality requirements for knitting; general definitions and principles of knitting; types of knitting needles – Bearded, Latch& Compound needle; elements of knitted loop structure
Activities: Analyze the structural and functional differences between woven, knitted and bonded fabrics based on their properties.
Unit II – Weft Knitting
Basic circular & weft knitted structures and their production -plain, rib, interlock and purl; fundamentals of formation of knit, tuck and float stitches; Types of weft knitted structure- end uses; flat-bed knitting; weft knitted fabric defects; factors affecting the formation of loop.
Activities: Compare different types of weft knitted fabrics and evaluate their suitability for various end uses.
Unit III – Warp Knitting
Basic principles- guide bar movement mechanism; elements of warp knitted loop open and closed laps; tricot and raschel warp knitting machines; warp knitted fabrics–structures (inlay and pillar structure) and end uses; warp knitted fabric defects.
Activities: Seminar on warp knitting machines in terms of working principles, fabric structures, and applications.
Unit IV – Web Preparation for Nonwoven
Introduction; principle, machines and processes for web preparation - dry laid, wet laid, air laid; quality control of webs; web preparation by polymeric solution.
Activities: Analyze different web preparation techniques and evaluate their influence on web structure and properties
Unit V – Bonding of Nonwoven
Bonding methods- principles and machine; processes for mechanical, thermal and chemical bonding; process parameters; application; testing of nonwoven.
Activities: Reproduce and analyze bonding methods in nonwovens.
