Course Objectives

  • To enable the students to learn.
  • The theory of various operations carried out at different stages of pre-spinning processes.
  • The construction and working of machinery used for preparatory.
  • Learn material passage in the spinning preparatory machines.
  • Identify the parts of machine and carryout production, draft and twist calculations.

Full Unit-wise Syllabus

Unit I – Introduction to Ginning and Spinning Machine

Description and working of different types of gins; ginning performance on yarn quality; Sequence of spinning machinery for producing carded, combed and blended yarns in short staple spinning system; numbering systems for textile materials and conversions.

Practical: Construction details and material passage in ginning machine

Activities: collection of different yarns and identification of yarn type, deriving constants in yarn numbering system and preparation of table for yarn numbering system, norms for raw materials, solving of GATE questions.

Unit II – Blowroom Machinery

Blow room - objectives, principle and description of opening and cleaning, blending machines, piano feed regulator, scutcher, chute feed, metal detectors, foreign matter detectors; cleaning efficiency, production calculations.

Practical: (1) Construction details and material passage in blow room machines (2) Gearing arrangement, calculation of rotating speed of working elements, cleaning efficiency and production of blow room machines

Activities: sketching and naming the parts, salient features of modern blow room machines, preparation and comparison of specifications for opening and cleaning machines for conventional and modern machines, norms for blow room process, solving of GATE questions.

Unit III – Carding Machine

Objectives and principle of carding operations; study of carding machine; auto-levelling; card clothing and its maintenance; draft and production calculation

Practical: (1) Construction details, material passage, wire point arrangements and settings of carding machine (2) Draft and production calculations in the carding machine

Activities: sketching and naming the parts, salient features of modern carding machines, preparation and comparison of specifications for various carding machines for conventional and modern machines, preparation of card settings for various counts, norms for carding process, solving of GATE questions.

Unit IV – Comber

Study of comber preparatory machines; objectives and principles of combing; sequence of combing operation; study of combing machine; combing efficiency and production calculation

Practical: (1) Construction details and material passage of comber (2) Combing cycle, draft and production calculations of comber

Activities: sketching and naming the parts, salient features of modern preparatory and comber machine, norms for combing preparatory and combing process, solving of GATE questions.

Unit V – Draw frame and Roving Frame

Draw frame – objectives and material passage in draw frame; drafting systems used in modern draw frames; auto-levelling; draft and production calculation; objectives and material passage in roving frame; bobbin builder mechanism; draft, twist and production calculations; safety measures at pre- spinning processes – equipment’s used, safety practices.

Practical: 1. Construction details, material passage, draft and production calculations of drawing machine 2. Construction details, material passage, draft, twist and production calculations of roving machine 3. Study of builder mechanism of roving machine 4. Determination of actual roller speed, eccentricity of roller and top arm loading 5. Production of samples of draw sliver and rove.

Activities: sketching and naming the parts, salient features of modern draw frame and simplex, sketching of builder mechanism and differential mechanism, norms for draw frame, solving of GATE questions.

  • CO1: Understand the fundamental principles of yarn spinning, fibre preparation, and basic spinning operations.
  • CO2: Apply the principles of yarn manufacturing processes such as opening, carding, drawing, and roving to achieve desired fibre preparation and process control.
  • CO3: Analyze the performance of spinning processes and machinery in terms of yarn quality, process efficiency, and production parameters.
  • CO4: Evaluate and select appropriate spinning techniques, machinery, and process parameters to produce yarns with specified quality characteristics.
