Course Objectives
- This course aims to provide students with fundamental knowledge of ship structural components, shipbuilding materials, and construction methods used in modern shipyards.
- It enables students to understand ship structural design, safety considerations, and classification requirements relevant to marine engineering practice.
Full Unit-wise Syllabus
Unit I – Introduction to Ship Construction
Types of ships and their general arrangement Basic ship terminology, Ship dimensions and principal particulars, Structural members of ships, Shipbuilding materials and properties, Shipyard layout and shipbuilding process.
Activities: Ship types identification, Diagram labeling (parts of ship) & Short report on materials.
Unit II – Hull Structure and Framing Systems
Longitudinal and transverse framing systems Bottom structure and double bottom construction, Keel, floors, girders and brackets Side shell plating and framing, Deck structure and deck beams, Bulkheads and watertight compartments
Activities: Model/drawing of framing systems, Sketch double bottom & bulkheads and Comparison discussion
Unit III – Structural Components of Ships
Bow and stern construction, Fore peak and aft peak structures, Engine room structure and foundations, Shaft tunnel and propeller shaft, Superstructures and deck houses, Hatch openings and hatch covers
Activities: Component mapping on diagram, Video-based identification & Short assignment.
Unit IV – Ship Construction Techniques
Welding in ship construction, Riveted and welded joints, Prefabrication and modular construction, Block construction method Ship launching methods, Dry docking and ship repair
Activities: Welding process study, Flowchart of block construction & Field/virtual shipyard visit
Unit V – Ship Structural Strength and Classification
Longitudinal strength of ships Stresses in hull girder, Load distribution on ship structures, Corrosion and protection methods, Role of classification societies, Ship structural inspection and maintenance.
Activities: Case study on failures, Basics of stress/load discussion & Corrosion & inspection activity.
