Course Objectives
- To introduce the fundamentals of standardization, conformity assessment, and the role of standards in manufacturing.
- To develop the ability to apply standards for engineering drawings, materials, testing, quality management, and safety.
- To ensure effective implementation of standards for quality, safety, and efficiency in industrial practices.
Full Unit-wise Syllabus
Unit I – Introduction
Aims of standardization, Types of standards, Importance of standards to industry.
Activities: Study and present the importance and types of standards used in manufacturing industries.
Unit II – Conformity Assessment
Objects of conformity assessment, First-party assessment, Second-party assessment, Third-party assessment, Certifications and markings.
Activities: Analyze different conformity assessment methods and identify certification markings on products.
Unit III – Standards for Engineering Drawing
SP 46:2003 – Sizes and layout of drawing sheets, Scales, Lines, Sections, Screw threads and threaded parts, Springs, Gears, Dimensioning, Surface texture, Linear and angular tolerances, Geometrical tolerances.
Activities: Interpret engineering drawings using SP 46 standards and identify dimensions, tolerances, and symbols.
Unit IV – Standard for Quality Management System
ISO 9001 – Requirements for Quality Management Systems
Activities: Analyze ISO 9001 requirements and their role in improving manufacturing quality.
Unit V – Standard for Safety of Machinery
IS 16819 - Safety of Machinery — General Principles for Design — Risk Assessment and Risk Reduction
Activities: Evaluate machine safety requirements and perform basic risk assessment as per standards.
Unit VI – Standard for Production Control
IS 15446: Guide to Production Control
Activities: Study production control standards and analyze their role in improving efficiency and workflow.

- CO1: Describe fundamental concepts of standardization, conformity assessment, engineering drawing standards, material standards, testing methods, quality systems, and machinery safety.
