Course Objectives

  • To provide an understanding of the role, development, and application of industrial engineering standards, and to enable students to interpret and apply national and international standards for quality, safety, ergonomics, sustainability, and management systems to improve productivity, compliance, and organizational performance.

Full Unit-wise Syllabus

Unit I – Introduction To Standards and Standardization

Definition and need for standards- Evolution and types of standards: product, process, system, service-Standardization, simplification, and variety reduction- Benefits of standards in productivity, quality, safety, and trade-marking and certification of articles and processes- WTO Good Practices for Standardization-Role of standards in Industrial Engineering functions.

Activities: Analyze the role of standardization in improving productivity, quality, and safety in an industry.

Unit II – National and International Standards Organizations and Factory Act

Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS): structure and functions-International Organization for Standardization (ISO)- International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC)- ASTM, ANSI, BSI – overview- Standard formulation process and stakeholder involvement-The Factory Act 1948.

Activities: Study BIS, ISO, and Factory Act provisions and present their role in industrial compliance.

Unit III – Quality and Management System Standards

ISO 9001: Quality Management System – principles and requirements-ISO 14001: Environmental Management System – overview- ISO 45001: Occupational Health and Safety Management System-PDCA cycle and risk- based thinking-IATF 16949: Automotive Quality Management System-Relevance of management system standards to industrial engineers.

Activities: Analyze ISO 9001/14001/45001 standards and their application in an organization.

Unit IV – Work, Safety, and Ergonomics Standards

Standards related to work measurement and method study- Time Standards: Standard Data, MTM, MOST - ISO 7250-1:2017- ISO7250- 2:2024-Ergonomics standards (workplace design, posture, manual handling)-Anthropometry - ISO 6385:2016-Industrial safety standards and statutory compliance-ISO 45001:2018- OHSAS 18001- NIOSH-Role of standards in human factors and productivity improvement- Introduction to labor and safety regulations (overview).

Activities: Evaluate workplace ergonomics and safety standards to improve worker efficiency and safety.

Unit V – Sustainability Environmental and Project Management Standards

ISO 14001:2015 - Environmental Management Systems - ISO 50001:2018 - Energy Management Systems - ISO 21500:2012 - Guidance on project management.

Activities: Study ISO standards related to environment, energy, and project management and their industrial applications.
