Course Objectives
- The students able to learn different methods of production of manmade fibres and post spinning operations.
Full Unit-wise Syllabus
Unit I – Polymer Preparation
Synthetic fibres – Monomers, source of monomers- structural principles of polymeric fibres; Polymer rheology-Newtonian and non- Newtonian fluids – shear flow, capillary flow and elongational flow behavior; Melt instabilities.
Activities: structure of monomers and polymers for manmade fibres, comparison of flow behavior of various polymers, solving of GATE questions.
Unit II – Melt Spinning
Melt Spinning- polymer selection and preparation, fibre spinning- process variables; structure formation, polyester, polyamide and polypropylene fibres; integrated processes; post spinning operations, properties and applications of fibres.
Activities: Process sequence and process control of spinning of various melt spun yarns recent developments in melt spun fibres, solving of GATE questions.
Unit III – Solution Spinning
Solution spinning- polymer selection and preparation; principle of fibre spinning- wet spinning, dry spinning and process variables, structure and morphology; post spinning operations, properties and applications of acrylic, polyurethane and regenerated cellulose fibres;
Activities: Process sequence and process control of spinning of various solution spun yarns recent developments in solutions spun fibres, Solving of GATE questions.
Unit IV – High performance and Speciality fibre Spinning
Liquid crystal polymers spinning; Gel spinning; dry jet wet spinning; electrospinning; Profile and hollow fibres.
Activities: Process sequence and process control of spinning of high performance fibres applications of high performance fibres, solving of GATE questions.
Unit V – Drawing and Spin Finish
Draw behavior of thermoplastic polymers; Neck drawing, drawing systems, influence of drawing on structure and properties of various fibres; spin finish – requirements, compositions and methods of application.
Activities: parameters for POY, FOY, HOY, spin finish formulations for various fibres, solving of GATE questions
Unit VI – Heat Setting and Texturing
Heat setting, nature of heat set- temporary and permanent; influencing parameters on heat setting, influence of heat setting on various fibre properties; texturizing principles- thermal, chemical, mechanical and thermo-mechanical; properties of textured yarns; applications.
Activities: Process parameters of production of different textured yarns, Process parameters of heat setting of thermoplastic fibres, images of various textured yarn, recycling of textiles, solving of GATE questions.
