Course Objectives

  • • To enable the students to learn fundamentals of garment manufacture.

Full Unit-wise Syllabus

Unit I – Apparel Industry Process Flow

Introduction to Indian apparel industry. Structure of an apparel industry-work flow, Pre production planning; types of samples and sample approval; Technical pack, Specification sheet – preparation, analysis and approval.

Activities: Analyze an existing apparel industry tech pack and develop a comprehensive tech pack for a selected garment style, including specifications, measurements, materials, and technical details

Unit II – Raw Material Selection

Requirements of fabric, types and applications of garment accessories and trims – Labels, linings, inter-linings, waddings, lace, braid, elastic, hook and loop fasteners, shoulder pads, eyelets, zip fasteners, buttons, rivets. sewing threads – types and construction

Activities: Identify and list various trims and accessories from different garments

Unit III – Pattern Layout Planning

Spreading - modes of spreading, different fabric packages, spreading tension, uniformity and alignment. Importance of grain in garment performance. Principles and types of layouts and marker planning - woven fabric lay, knitted fabric lay, types of fabric lay and Marker efficiency. Principles of cutting and cut order plan, bundling and numbering. Control parameters and planning for inspection to numbering

Activities: Fabric inspection, carry out spreading for striped and checked fabrics, marker planning and cutting process in garment production with industry examples

Unit IV – Production Systems

Production systems- individual system; Factory production system- batch production system, progressive bundle system, straight line system, progressive bundle system, conveyor belt system, unit production system, modular production system, quick response system and just in time system. Quality control in sewing section, assembly of garment components and operational break down

Activities: Identification of production system based on garment, collection of garment defects picture

Unit V – Apparel Finishing Process

Fusing requirements and process; stain removal process and machine, ironing and pressing process and machines. Pressing Machines: buck press for shirt and pant, carousal press and tunnel press. Packaging – types, functions and suitable machines– types of packaging forms

Activities: Case study on garment finishing processes (fusing, stain removal, pressing and packaging) with industry examples

  • CO2: Apply knowledge of accessories, trims, stitches, and seams in apparel product development and manufacturing.
  • CO3: Analyze inspection, spreading, and cutting processes to improve material utilization and production efficiency.
  • CO4: Evaluate different production systems adopted in apparel manufacturing based on productivity, quality and operational effectiveness.
  • CO5: Design apparel finishing and packaging strategies that meet quality standards, sustainability requirements, and consumer expectations.
