Course Objectives

  • This course introduces the core principles of UI and UX design, with a focus on Human-Centered Design (HCD) approaches.
  • Students will learn to develop prototypes, test usability, and refine designs through iterative methods.
  • Emphasis is placed on accessibility, inclusivity, and emotional design for impactful user experiences.

Full Unit-wise Syllabus

Unit I – Introduction to UI/UX & Human-Centered Design

Definitions and differences between UI and UX – Importance of Human Centered Design – UX lifecycle and design thinking.

Activities: Case study discussion on good and bad UI; Identify and present HCD practices in daily-use digital products.

Unit II – User Research and Persona Development

User research methods (interviews, surveys, observations) – Creating user personas and empathy maps – Understanding user goals and pain points.

Activities: Conducting mock user interviews; Group presentation on personas; Quizzes.

Unit III – Information Architecture and Wireframing

Navigation design and content organization – Card sorting, site maps – Wireframing tools and methods.

Activities: Design site maps for an e-commerce app; Quiz on information architecture; Wireframe assignment.

Unit IV – Visual Design and Interaction Principles

Visual hierarchy, color theory, typography – Responsive and interactive design principles – Accessibility and inclusive design.

Activities: Analyzing color accessibility tools (e.g., WebAIM); Create responsive UI mockups.

Unit V – Prototyping and Usability Testing

Building interactive prototypes – Usability testing methods and metrics – Iterative testing and design updates.

Activities: Conduct A/B testing on designs; Quizzes.

Unit VI – Advanced Topics in UX

Emotion-driven design – Ethical issues in UX – Future trends: voice UI, AR/VR in UX.

Activities: Discussion on emotional impact of design; Assignment problems.
