CE25C10 Soil Mechanics Laboratory – Semester IV – Civil(Env) – R-2025

Subject Code & Name: CE25C10 – Soil Mechanics Laboratory

Regulation: R-2025

Semester: IV (Fourth Semester)

Branch: B.E. Civil Engineering (Environmental Engineering) (Civil(Env))

Credits / L-T-P: 2 Credits | L-T-P: 0-0-4

Course Objectives

  • To develop students’ skills to test the soils for their index and engineering properties, and to characterize the soil based on its properties.

Full Unit-wise Syllabus

List of Experiments

  • Determination of Index Properties a) Specific gravity of soil solids b) Grain size distribution – Sieve analysis and Hydrometer analysis c) Liquid limit and Plastic limit tests
  • Determination of In-situ Density and Compaction Characteristics a) Field density Test (Core cutter and Sand replacement method) b) Determination of moisture–density relationship using standard proctor compaction test.
  • Determination of Engineering Properties a) Permeability determination (constant head and falling head methods) b) Direct shear test in cohesion less soil c) Unconfined compression test in cohesive soil d) Vane Shear test e) Tri-axial compression test in cohesion less soil (Demonstration only)

Tasks

  • Prepare a bore log report by performing index and engineering tests for the samples obtained from a nearby site location.
  • Develop a compaction and permeability assessment report and interpret the suitability of soil for backfill.
  • Evaluate shear strength characteristics and estimate bearing capacity of shallow foundations using obtained parameters.

Course Outcomes (COs)

  • CO1: Explain the basic principles and procedures of soil laboratory tests for determining index and engineering properties.
  • CO2: Perform soil laboratory tests and analyze results to evaluate compaction, permeability, and consolidation characteristics.
  • CO3: Interpret shear strength parameters and assess their implications for bearing capacity and foundation performance.

Assessment Pattern (Quick Note)

  • Weightage: Continuous Assessment 60% | End Semester Examinations 40% Methodology for Continuous Assessment : Project (30%), Assignment (10%), Practical (30%), Internal Examinations (30%) References 1.
