Subject Code & Name: BT25402 – Basic Industrial Biotechnology

Regulation: R-2025

Semester: IV (Fourth Semester)

Branch: B.Tech. Biotechnology (Biotech)

Credits / L-T-P: 3 Credits | L-T-P: 3-0-0

Course Objectives

  • To provide fundamental knowledge of industrial biotechnology, focusing on microorganisms, enzymes, and bioprocesses for large-scale production.

Full Unit-wise Syllabus

Unit I – Introduction To Industrial Biotechnology

Definition and scope of industrial biotechnology; historical developments; role of microorganisms in industry; classification of industrial products (primary and secondary metabolites); overview of fermentation technology; screening and selection of industrially important microorganisms; strain improvement methods (mutation and selection).

Activities: Prepare a comparative chart of different industrial products (e.g., citric acid, ethanol, and antibiotics), mentioning microorganism used, substrate, and applications.

Unit II – Fermentation Technology

Types of fermentation processes (batch, fed-batch, continuous); components of fermentation media; sterilization methods; design and operation of bioreactors; parameters affecting fermentation (pH, temperature, aeration, agitation); scale-up of fermentation processes.

Activities: Group discussion/Assignment on the challenges involved in scaling up fermentation from laboratory to industrial level.

Unit III – Microbial Production of Industrial Products

Production of organic acids (citric acid, lactic acid); production of alcohol (ethanol); production of antibiotics (penicillin); production of enzymes (amylase, protease); production of vitamins; concept of primary and secondary metabolites.

Activities: Design a basic experiment to screen microorganisms for enzyme production (e.g., amylase or protease) and predict the expected outcome.

Unit IV – Downstream Processing

Introduction to downstream processing; steps involved – separation, purification, and polishing; methods of cell disruption; filtration and centrifugation; extraction and precipitation; chromatography techniques; drying and formulation of final products.

Activities: Case study analysis of downstream processing in biofuel production, focusing on separation and purification strategies.

Unit V – Applications of Industrial Biotechnology

Applications in food industry (fermented foods, dairy products); applications in pharmaceuticals; applications in agriculture (bio- fertilizers, bio-pesticides); environmental applications (bioremediation, waste treatment); basics of bio-refineries and biofuels.

Activities: Case study to select a suitable bio-fertilizer or bio-pesticide for a given crop problem.

Course Outcomes (COs)
