Course Objectives
- To introduce the fundamental scientific principles relevant to interior spaces and materials.
- To explore the role of natural and physical sciences in human-centric design.
- To analyze environmental and climatic factors influencing interior comfort and health.
- To understand lighting, acoustics, and thermal performance for efficient space planning.
- To develop an understanding of environmental performance factors and their application in creating comfortable, efficient, and sustainable interior environments.
Full Unit-wise Syllabus
Unit I – Introduction to Applied Science in Interiors
Role of science in interior design. Human body-environment relationship. Basics of environmental science. Introduction to comfort parameters (thermal, visual, acoustic).
Unit II – Light and Illumination
Nature and properties of light. Lumen, lux, glare, CRI, color temperature, color rendering index, and lighting terminology. Lighting standards for different spaces. Energy-efficient lighting solutions. Day lighting vs artificial lighting. Relevant provisions of NBC.
Unit III – Acoustics in Interior Spaces
Basics of sound: frequency, amplitude, decibel. Sound behavior in enclosed spaces. Materials for sound absorption, insulation, and diffusion. Relevant provisions of NBC.
Unit IV – Thermal Comfort and Indoor Climate
Heat transfer mechanisms: conduction, convection, radiation. Thermal insulation and building materials. Indoor air quality. Passive design strategies for thermal comfort.
Unit V – Environmental Psychology and Space
Interiors as a catalyst to physical, physiological and psychological well being – creation of positive and efficient working with social and psychological calculation needs of occupants – Lighting, color configuration, scale, proportion, acoustics and materials addressing the senses of the individual and generate a spectrum of feelings and practices. Case studies of selected residential, commercial interiors focusing on environmental comfort and performance – Analysis of exemplary projects with respect to lighting design, acoustics, thermal comfort, ventilation, and indoor environmental quality.

Assessment Pattern (Quick Note)
- Weightage: Continuous Internal Assessment 40% | End Semester Examinations 60%
- Internal methodology: Two Assessments with equal weightage. One Assessment as Internal written Test/Examination (50%), second as Assignment (50%) of any mode such as study, seminar, and or a combination of modes, etc
