Course Objectives
- The course introduces standardization, conformity assessment, and the roles of BIS and ISO, while familiarizing students with key standards in engineering drawings, testing, management systems, and machinery safety for practical application.
Full Unit-wise Syllabus
Unit I – Introduction
Aims of standardization, Types of standards, Importance of standards to industry.
Activities: Study and present the importance and types of standards used in mechanical engineering industries.
Unit II – Conformity Assessment
Objects of conformity assessment, First-party assessment, Second-party assessment, Third-party assessment, Certifications and markings.
Activities: Analyze different types of conformity assessment and identify certification markings on products.
Unit III – Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS)
Objectives, roles, and functions of BIS.
Activities: Study BIS functions and identify BIS standards applied to common engineering components.
Unit IV – International Organization for Standardization (ISO)
Key principles for ISO standards development, ISO Directives, Stages in ISO standard development.
Activities: Analyze ISO standard development process and study key ISO standards.
Unit V – Robotics and Automation Standards
IEC 61131 - sections: is the international standard for programmable controller programming languages. ISO 10218-1:2011 – PART 1 AND2 - Specifies requirements and guidelines for the inherent safe design, protective measures, and information for use of industrial robots. IEC 61496-1:2020 specifies general requirements for the design, construction and testing of non- contact electro-sensitive protective equipment (ESPE) designed specifically to detect persons or part of a person as part of a safety-related system.
