Course Objectives

  • To Impart knowledge on the measurement of various physical parameters using Data Acquisition system.

Full Unit-wise Syllabus

Unit I – Fundamentals of Measurements

Measurement System, Instrumentation, Classification and Characteristics of Transducers, Static and Dynamic – Errors in Measurements and their statistical analysis- methods of error analysis, uncertainty analysis-expression of uncertainty: accuracy and precision index, propagation of errors- Calibration -Primary and secondary standards.

Activities: Perform error and uncertainty analysis on measurement data and calibrate a basic instrument.

Unit II – Motion, Proximity and Ranging Sensors

Motion Sensors – Potentiometers, Resolver, Encoders – Optical, Magnetic, Inductive, Capacitive, LVDT – RVDT – Synchro – Microsyn, Accelerometer – GPS, Bluetooth, Range Sensors – RF beacons, Ultrasonic Ranging, Reflective beacons, Laser Range Sensor (LIDAR).

Activities: Demonstrate displacement or position measurement using sensors like LVDT or encoder.

Unit III – Force, Magnetic and Heading Sensors

Strain Gage, Load Cell, Magnetic Sensors –types, principle, requirement and advantages: Magneto resistive – Hall Effect – Current sensor Heading Sensors – Compass, Gyroscope, Inclinometers.

Activities: Measure force using a load cell and analyze output from magnetic or Hall effect sensors.

Unit IV – Optical, Pressure and Temperature Sensors

Photo conductive cell, photo voltaic, Photo resistive, LDR – Fiber optic sensors – Pressure – Diaphragm, Bellows, Piezoelectric – Tactile sensors, Temperature – IC, Thermistor, RTD, Thermocouple. Acoustic Sensors – flow and level measurement, Radiation Sensors - Smart Sensors- Film sensor, MEMS & Nano Sensors, LASER sensors.

Activities: Measure temperature or pressure using appropriate sensors and compare readings.

Unit V – Signal Conditioning and DAQ Systems

Amplification – Filtering – Sample and Hold circuits – Data Acquisition: Single channel and multichannel data acquisition – Data logging - applications - Automobile, Aerospace, Home appliances, Manufacturing, Environmental monitoring, Biosensors: transduction mechanism in a biosensor and Classification – Electronic nose.

Activities: Acquire and analyze sensor data using a basic data acquisition system.

  • CO2: Apply the fundamental principles of Various types of Sensors and Signal conditioning.
  • CO3: Analyze the working principle and characteristics various types of sensors, signal conditioning and DAQ systems.
  • CO4: Design and development the interfacing circuit of sensors and signal conditioning with control systems.
