Full Unit-wise Syllabus
Unit I – Standards And Organizations - Fundamental Concepts
Introduction to standardization in Aerospace engineering and the need for global standards. Overview of ASTM, ASME, and ISO frameworks including key committees, document types, and major Aerospace standards. Role of FAA, EASA, and AS91XX series in regulatory compliance and quality management.
Activities: Study of Importance of ISO/IEC 17025 for testing laboratory accreditation, calibration, and documentation.
Unit II – ASTM Material Testing Standards and Methods
ASTM mechanical testing standards such as E8/E8M, E9, and related methods for tensile, compression, and radiographic evaluation of Aerospace materials. Key fracture and impact testing standards including E399, E1290, and E23. Fatigue and cyclic loading evaluation using ASTM E466 and E567.
Activities: Thermal and environmental testing standards for Aerospace durability assessment.
Unit III – ASME Design Codes and Safety Standards
ASME BPVC structure and Aerospace-relevant sections, particularly Sections VIII and X. Key design requirements for pressure vessels, including thickness calculations, welding, inspection, and buckling analysis for Aerospace applications.
Activities: ASME B31.3 piping rules for pressure, temperature, flexibility, and inspection in cryogenic and propulsion systems.
Unit IV – ISO Standards for Aircraft & Environmental Testing
ISO TC20 structure, including SC3 (Materials), SC4 (Propulsion), SC6 (Environmental Testing), and SC7 (Fluid Systems). Aircraft environmental testing per ISO 4108 Series covering temperature, humidity, thermal shock, vibration, altitude, dust/fungus resistance, and flammability.
Activities: ISO 6954 for environmental conditions and ISO 2409/6945 for material and component testing.
Unit V – Quality Management, Documentation & Compliance
Aerospace quality systems (AS9100D, AS9110C, AS9120B) covering risk management, counterfeit control, configuration management, and traceability. Documentation of testing and inspection, including test plans, environmental profiles, reports, and acceptance criteria.
Activities: Management of compliance and non-conformance using Compliance Documents, root cause analysis
Unit VI – Global Aviation Regulations and Certification Awareness
Introduction to global aerospace regulatory authorities and certification frameworks with emphasis on FAA, DGCA, and EASA. Understanding the fundamentals of airworthiness, certification basis, compliance demonstration, and regulatory oversight.
Activities: Study of FAA, DGCA, and EASA official publications, certification guidance materials, advisory circulars, regulatory documents, and selected open- source references related to aerospace certification and compliance.
