Course Objectives
- This course provides fundamental knowledge of seamanship, navigation, mooring operations, and survival techniques at sea.
- It enables students to apply navigational methods, handle shipboard operations, and respond effectively to emergencies for safe maritime practices.
Full Unit-wise Syllabus
Unit I – Seamanship, Basics of Ship Handling, Rope Work and Deck Work
General organization of a ship, various types of ships, important parts of a ship, maritime terminology, various types of knots, basic knots and bends in the rope work, uses of rudder and propeller, various commands on steering and main propulsion equipment, deck equipment, safe working practices to be followed while working on the deck.
Activities: Demonstrate basic knots and simulate ship handling commands and deck safety practices.
Unit II – Mooring Operations
Mooring winch and windlass constructional detail. Different types of anchors and their constructional details, various terminology associated with anchoring- drooping and weighing of anchor, cable stopper, purpose of cable locker. Anchor chain ranging and calibration. Various methods of mooring a ship. Safe working practices on mooring winches and windlass operation.
Activities: Study anchoring and mooring procedures and illustrate safe operation of mooring equipment.
Unit III – Navigation of Ships
Types of navigation- coastal navigation, celestial navigation and electronic navigation. Latitudes and longitude, time zones, standard time. Plotting ship’s position in Navigational charts, true and magnetic compass. Sextant, GPS, log and echo sounder. Route planning and simple passage planning.
Activities: Plot a ship’s position on a navigational chart using coordinates and basic instruments.
Unit IV – Survival Equipment
Various emergencies, lifesaving appliances- life raft, life boat and rescue boats, EPIRB, SART, TPA. Survival pack, Stowage and securing arrangement, Abandon ship: Manning of lifeboat and life raft. Muster list. Radio and alarm signals, Distress signals (S.O.S) Distress Calls time and Radio frequency. Pyrotechnics. Survival factors and challenges, equipment available, duties of crew members, Initial action on boarding survival craft, maintaining the craft.
Activities: Analyze lifesaving appliances and demonstrate emergency procedures like abandon ship.
Unit V – Challenges for Survival at Sea
Launching procedure for life raft and lifebuoys. Embarkation into lifeboat and life raft Actions to be taken immediately on barding the life raft or life buoy. Hypothermia, hyperthermia, drinks of death. Manning a life raft. Finding food and water at sea. Importance of group survival strategies.
Activities: Evaluate survival strategies and actions required in emergency situations at sea.
