Course Objectives
- To provide comprehensive knowledge on the principles of remote sensing, electromagnetic radiation, and sensor systems.
Full Unit-wise Syllabus
Unit I – Fundamentals of Remote Sensing, EMR
Principles of remote sensing, electromagnetic spectrum, radiation laws, and energy interactions. Atmospheric effects, spectral signatures, and reflectance characteristics of earth features.
Activities: Poster Presentation on reflectance characteristics
Unit II – Satellite Orbits, Platforms and Sensors
Satellite motion, Kepler’s laws, orbital types, and remote sensing platforms. Sensor types, resolution concepts, and characteristics of earth observation satellites.
Activities: Flipped Classroom discussion on satellite platforms and sensors.
Unit III – Remote Sensing Data Products and Image Processing
Types of remote sensing data, preprocessing, corrections, and image enhancement techniques. Histogram analysis, band combinations, filtering, and data management.
Activities: Seminar on histogram stretching and image enhancement.
Unit IV – Image Interpretation and Applications
Visual and digital image interpretation techniques, LULC mapping, and image statistics; Applications in agriculture, water resources, disaster management, and urban planning.
Activities: Case study on Land use/land cover mapping using satellite imagery
Course Outcomes (COs)
- CO1: Explain the principles of electromagnetic radiation and its interaction with atmosphere and earth surface features.
- CO2: Interpret remote sensing data acquired from various satellite platforms and sensors based on resolution and data characteristics.
- CO3: Analyze and preprocess satellite data using visual and digital image interpretation techniques.
- CO4: Select appropriate remote sensing data products for specific engineering and environmental applications.
