Unit I – Introduction to Geospatial Systems
Fundamentals of electromagnetic radiation; Overview of Remote Sensing, GIS, GPS; Components of GIS: Hardware, Software, Data, People, and Methods; File operations and system basics.
Practicals: Introduction to Remote Sensing Sensors and resolution
Mandatory Activity: Seminar
Unit II – Geospatial Data Services
Geospatial data sources and formats; Open data policies and data acquisition; Land use/land cover datasets and Digital Elevation Models (DEMs)
Practicals: Exploring geospatial data sources
Mandatory Activity: Quiz
Unit III – Geoportals and Web GIS
Network concepts, layers, and protocols; Geospatial and Web GIS protocols; Interactive mapping and data sharing
Practicals: Exploring open data portals
Mandatory Activity: Flipped Classroom - Students explore geoportals before class and discuss mapping solutions in groups.
Unit IV – Satellite Applications
Image processing techniques; Satellite image interpretation; Applications: Agriculture, disaster, water resource, urban planning
Practicals: Creating GeoPDF with geotagged photographs
Mandatory Activity: Poster Presentation
Unit V – GIS Applications Using Open Data
Open data integration with GIS; Applications in health, environment, disaster, and urban planning
Practicals: Creating story maps using Google Earth
Mandatory Activity: Project-Based Learning – Story Maps
