Course Objectives
- To impart the fundamentals of design elements, principles, develop visual awareness, conceptualization and creative expression in the fashion design.
Full Unit-wise Syllabus
Unit I – Design Fundamentals
Definition; Importance and role of design in daily life, Types of design: Functional, Aesthetic, Visual, Structural, Introduction to the Design Process. Observation and analysis of design in everyday objects. Exploration of design across disciplines such as fashion, product and communication. Introduction to creative thinking, problem-solving, and user-centred design approaches.
Activity: Demonstration of fashion design in everyday life.
Unit II – Elements of Design
Line, Shape, Form, Space, Texture, Color, Value, Characteristics and functions of each element, Application of elements in 2D and 3D compositions, Collage and composition exercises focusing on individual elements, Elements of design in apparels.
Activity: virtual demonstration Application of elements in 2D and 3D compositions.
Unit III – Principles of Design
Balance, Proportion, Emphasis, Rhythm, Harmony, Contrast, Unity, Visual hierarchy and composition, Principles in the context of garment and textile design, Create abstract compositions using principles, Understanding visual hierarchy and layout. Application of design principles in clothing, accessories, and fashion styling.
Activity: Demonstration on clothing, accessories, and fashion styling.
Unit IV – Colour Theory and Application
Colour wheel, primary/secondary/tertiary colours, Warm vs. Cool colours, Tints, Shades, Neutrals, Colour psychology and symbolism in fashion, Colour harmonies: Monochromatic, Complementary, Analogous, Colours theories, Colour perception and optical effects in fabric design and styling.
Activity: Identification of Colour perception and optical effects in fabric design.
Unit V – Introduction to Fashion Design Context
Concept development and basic design sketching. Fashion as a branch of design: creative and commercial perspectives. The relationship between art, craft, and design, Influences on fashion design: cultural, historical, technological, and social, Case studies of fashion designers and iconic collections, Evolution of fashion as a design narrative, Fashion theories, Introduction to conceptualization and design interpretation in fashion.
Activity: case studies on fashion designers and iconic collections.
