Semester: III (Third Semester)
Branch: B.E. Environmental Engineering (Env)
Credits / L-T-P: 4 Credits | L-T-P: 3-0-2
Course Objectives
- To provide fundamental understanding of microorganisms, their role in environmental systems, wastewater treatment, nutrient cycling, and environmental toxicology for assessing ecological and human health impacts.
Full Unit-wise Syllabus
Unit I – Microbial Fundamentals
Classification of microorganisms, cell structure, and importance of microbes. Pathogens in water, soil, and air, their transmission and health impacts. Basics of DNA, RNA, recombinant DNA technology, biosafety, and bioethics.
Practical: 1. Microscopic observation and staining (Gram staining) of microorganisms. 2. Basic DNA extraction from microbial or plant samples.
Unit II – Microbial Diversity
Microbial diversity in aquatic and terrestrial environments, including extreme conditions. Occurrence in water, soil, and air, and microbial roles in biogeochemical cycles.
Practical: 3. Determination of microorganisms in water/soil using plate count method.
Unit III – Microbial Metabolism
Microbial nutrition, growth phases, metabolism, aerobic and anaerobic respiration, and bioenergetics. Biodegradation of pollutants and bioremediation processes.
Practical: 4. Determination of microbial growth curve combined with biochemical tests for metabolic activity.
Unit IV – Wastewater Microbiology
Microbiology of wastewater treatment, aerobic and anaerobic processes, nutrient removal, and indicator organisms. Environmental toxicology concepts including toxicity and biomagnification.
Practical: 5. Determination of coliform bacteria (MPN method)
Activities: 1: Analyze a given water sample for basic quality parameters (e.g., BOD) and microbial contamination (MPN method), interpret results, and assess public health risks with suitable treatment recommendations. 2: Conduct microbial enumeration of soil/water samples, evaluate the influence of environmental conditions on microbial growth, and relate findings to nutrient cycling and ecosystem functions. 3: Investigate microbial growth and metabolic activity through growth curve and biochemical tests, and evaluate their role in biodegradation of organic pollutants and bioremediation strategies.
Course Outcomes (COs)
