Course Objectives
- To provide comprehensive understanding of polymerization mechanisms, including kinetics and chain transfer processes.
Full Unit-wise Syllabus
Unit I – Polymerization Mechanisms and Kinetics
Polymerization mechanisms, kinetics of polymerization reactions, chain transfer reactions and their effect on molecular weight and polymer structure.
Activities: Case Study on biodegradable plastics: their properties, synthesis methods, and environmental applications.
Unit II – Copolymerization and Molecular Weight Determination
Reactivity ratios and their significance, Determination of molecular weight, Factors influencing copolymer composition and kinetics.
Activities: Interactive Quiz on Identification of polymer types from structural formulas; Relation to copolymer formation and properties.
Unit III – Structure–Property Relationships
Correlation between molecular structure and physical properties, Polymer morphology and its effect on mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties.
Activities: Group Project on plastic product selection; Material modifications for improved mechanical or electrical performance.
Unit IV – Characterization
Thermal stability, glass transition, and melting behaviour; Mechanical properties: tensile strength, elasticity, toughness.
Activities: Problem-solving sessions on reaction rates and predict yields; Simulation of mechanical testing for the given polymer properties.
Unit V – Analytical Methods
UV-Vis, IR spectroscopy interpretation, Thermodynamics of polymer dissolution and solubility parameters, Modification techniques for property enhancement.
Activities: Hands-on interpretation of real spectra (IR, UV-Vis); Demonstration on solubility / analytical methods.
Unit VI – Degradation and Waste Management
Chemical degradation, aging, and environmental wear; Biodegradable and photodegradable polymers; Plastic waste management and circular economy.
Activities: Project on waste management protocol for separating plastics from municipal waste.
