Course Objectives
- To impart knowledge on particulate properties, size reduction, solid-fluid separation, filtration operations and air pollution control equipment used in chemical process industries.
Full Unit-wise Syllabus
Unit I – Particulate properties and screening
General characteristics of solids; Characterization of solid particles; Differential and cumulative size analysis; Screening methods and equipment; Screen efficiency.
Practical: Screen efficiency determination by sieve analysis
Activities: Evaluate screening equipment performance for industrial applications.
Unit II – Size reduction and enlargement
Laws of size reduction and applicability; Energy relationship in size reduction; Power requirement; Work index; Method of size reduction; Types, classification and selection of size reduction equipments. Size enlargement and equipment.
Practical: Work index, various constants and reduction ratio determination in Jaw Crusher/ Roll Crusher/ Ball mill/ Drop weight crusher
Activities: Analyze energy requirements for size reduction operations, compare different crushing and grinding equipment based on literature data.
Unit III – Sedimentation and Elutriation
Theory and operation: Gravity settling; Sedimentation; Thickening; Elutriation.
Practical: Batch Sedimentation studies; Characteristics of Elutriator
Activities: Interpret sedimentation dynamics for various particle sizes.
Unit IV – Filtration
Theory of filtration; classification of process; Flow through filter cake and filter media; filtration equipments – selection and operation.
Practical: Filter characteristics of Plate and Frame Filter press / Leaf filter
Activities: Analyze selection and operation of industrial filtration equipment, compare filtration performance under different operating conditions.
Unit V – Gas – Solid Separation
Industrial dust removing equipment; Electrostatic precipitators; Cyclone; Bag filters; Scrubbers.
Practical: Efficiency calculation of cyclone separator
Activities: Analyze the working principles of air pollution control equipment, calculate collection efficiency of cyclone separators, evaluate suitable dust removal systems for industrial emission control.
