Course Objectives
- This course provides a foundational understanding of chemical engineering by introducing students to core concepts. It covers essential topics highlighting their applications in real-world industries. The course also emphasizes the role of chemical engineers.
Full Unit-wise Syllabus
Unit I – Overview of Chemical Engineering
Overview of chemical Engineering. Introduction to Unit Operations and Processes. Process Flow Sheeting symbols and representation of unit operations, Unit conversions, Mass and Energy conservation equations.
Activity: Virtual demonstration of flow sheeting and symbols petroleum refinery.
Unit II – Fluid Flow, Thermodynamics and Transport
Basics of fluid flow and flow measurements, Basic Thermodynamics and its application, Principles and Applications of particle Mechanics, Principles and Applications of Heat and Mass transfer. Chemical Kinetics and Reaction Engineering. Introduction to Process Control and symbols (P&ID).
Activity: Virtual demonstration of flow machining devices, size reduction equipment; Virtual demonstration of Heat transfer mechanics.
Unit III – Applications, Software and Safety
Significance of Chemical Engineering in Food, Health, Energy and Environment. Software and applications in chemical industries. Safety in process industries. Few Case studies.
Activity: Report preparation in any process industry.
