Course Objectives
- To impart knowledge on unit operations, unit processes, manufacturing flow sheets, process engineering aspects, and industrial applications involved in major chemical process industries.
Full Unit-wise Syllabus
Unit I – Sugar And Wood Based Industries
Introduction to chemical processing; symbolic representation of different unit operations and unit processes to build a flow sheet; Production of pulp and paper, Manufacture of sugar, starch and starch derivatives.
Activities: Prepare process flow diagrams for pulp, paper and sugar industries, studies about by-product formation in starch and sugar manufacturing industries. Description of latest technology for starch and sugar manufacturing industries.
Unit II – Alkalis and Acids Industries — Chlor-alkali Industries
Manufacture of Soda ash, Manufacture of caustic soda and chlorine - common salt. Sulphur and Sulphuric acid: Mining of sulphur and manufacture of sulphuric acid, Manufacture of hydrochloric acid.
Activities: Evaluate process flow sheets and identify engineering challenges in alkali and acid manufacturing plants. Description of latest technology alkali and acid manufacturing plants.
Unit III – Cement, Oil, Paint and Petrochemical Industries
Cement-Types and Manufacture of Portland cement, Refining of edible oils and fats, fatty acids, Manufacture of Soaps and detergents; Manufacture of paints and Varnishes–Pigments, Petroleum refining- physical and chemical conversion products, lubricating oil, petrochemical precursors, chemicals from aromatics.
Activities: Description of latest technology for the above industries. Analysis of pollution emission in cement, paint, and petroleum industries.
Unit IV – Fibers, Silica and Industrial Gases
Natural and synthetic fibers- Manufacture of nylon 6,6 and nylon 6 fibers, viscose rayon and polyester fibers; PET, Nature, types, composition and uses of glass-its manufacture, melting, shaping, annealing and finishing operations; ceramics and refractories: Fuel gases-producer gas, coke oven gas, natural gas, LNG Industrial gases-carbon dioxide, hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen.
Activities: Compare properties and applications of glass, ceramics and refractories, construct P&ID for fuel gas and industrial gas production processes.
Unit V – Fertilizer Industries
Nitrogen Fertilizers; Synthetic ammonia, nitric acid, Urea, Phosphorous Fertilizers: Phosphate rock, phosphoric acid, super phosphate and Triple Super phosphate, ammonium phosphate, potassium chloride, potassium phosphate.
Activities: Evaluate raw material utilization and by-product generation in fertilizer industries, analyze major engineering problems associated with ammonia, urea and phosphate fertilizer production. Analysis of pollution emission for the manufacturing processes.
Course Outcomes (COs)
- CO1: Understand the unit operations, unit processes symbols, and flow schemes involved in pulp, paper sugar, starch, and derivative industries.
- CO2: Apply principles of chemical technology to manufacturing processes in chlor alkali, acid sulphur, glass, ceramic, and refractory industries.
- CO3: Analyze manufacturing processes and process flow sheets associated with cement, soaps, detergents paints, petrochemical, synthetic fiber, industrial gas and fuel gas industries.
- CO4: Evaluate the operational performance, engineering challenges, and sustainability aspects of fertilizer and large scale chemical manufacturing industries.
- CO5: Design suitable process schemes and industrial manufacturing routes for chemical products based on technical, economic, and environmental considerations.
