OBJECTIVES:
<ul>
<li>To introduce  the  concepts  of  mass,  momentum  and  energy  conservation  relating  to aerodynamics.</li>
<li>To make the student understand the concept of vorticity, irrotationality, theory of airfoils and wing sections.</li>
<li>To introduce the basics of viscous flow.</li>
</ul>
 
UNIT I             INTRODUCTION TO LOW SPEED FLOW                                                                     9
Euler  equation,  incompressible  bernoulli’s  equation.  circulation  and  vorticity,  green’s  lemma  and stoke’s theorem, barotropic flow, kelvin’s theorem, streamline, stream function, irrotational flow, potential function, equipontential lines, elementary flows and their combinations.
 
UNIT II            TWO DIMENSIONAL INVISCID INCOMPRESSIBLE FLOW                                        9
Ideal Flow over a circular cylinder, D’Alembert’s paradox, magnus effect, Kutta joukowski’s theorem, starting vortex, kutta condition,  real flow over smooth and rough cylinder.
 
UNIT III           AIRFOIL THEORY                                                                                                          9
Cauchy-riemann relations, complex potential, methodology of conformal transformation, kutta- joukowski transformation and its applications, thin airfoil theory and its applications.
 
UNIT IV          SUBSONIC WING THEORY                                                                                           9
Vortex filament, biot and savart law, bound vortex and trailing vortex, horse shoe vortex, lifting line theory and its limitations.
 
UNIT V           INTRODUCTION TO BOUNDARY LAYER THEORY                                                    9
Boundary layer and boundary layer thickness, displacement thickness, momentum thickness, energy thickness, shape parameter, boundary layer equations for a steady, two dimensional incompressible flow, boundary layer growth over a flat plate, critical reynolds number, blasius solution, basics of turbulent flow.

OBJECTIVES:
<ul>
<li>To develop skill to use software to create 2D and 3D models.</li>
</ul>
 
LIST OF EXERCISES USING SOFTWARE CAPABLE OF DRAFTING AND MODELING
 
<ol>
<li>Study of capabilities of software for Drafting and Modeling – Coordinate systems (absolute, relative, polar, etc.) – Creation of simple figures like polygon and general multi-line figures.</li>
<li>Drawing of a Title Block with necessary text and projection symbol.</li>
<li>Drawing of curves like parabola, spiral, involute using Bspline or cubic spline.</li>
<li>Drawing of front view and top view of simple solids like prism, pyramid, cylinder, cone, etc, and dimensioning.</li>
<li>Drawing front view, top view and side view of objects from the given pictorial views (eg. V-</li>
</ol>
block, Base of a mixie, Simple stool, Objects with hole and curves).

<li>Drawing of a plan of residential building ( Two bed rooms, kitchen, hall, etc.)</li>
<li>Drawing of a simple steel truss.</li>
<li>Drawing sectional views of prism, pyramid, cylinder, cone, etc,</li>

<li>Creation of 3-D models of simple objects and obtaining 2-D multi-view drawings from 3-D</li>

model.
Note: Plotting of drawings must be made for each exercise and attached to the records written by students.
